Don’t stop – give yourself the best choice

Students with Disabilities

You have a right to education at every level whether you are student who struggles with reading and writing (Dyslexia) or are a wheelchair user.

Every education provider has to provide for you, with help ranging from personal support, through to laptops and lifts.

Students with disabilities can apply for additional funding for support in their studies. This can cover equipment, non-medical helpers (note takers etc.) and additional travel costs. Most students apply to their Local Authority but students in health professions apply to the NHS Student Grants Unit and Open University students straight to the Open University.

How much you can get does NOT depend on your income or that of your household. Unlike a student loan, this assistance does not have to be repaid.

The Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) is additional to other financial
help, does not depend on the level of student loan and does not
have to be paid back.

To gain these financial benefits it is important to declare your disability early so that everything is in place by the time you start your course.
